Subject: Flare Genesis Schedule

The latest wind maps at balloon float altitude over Antarctica show a vortex moving toward the pole, so prospects for the launch window opening in the next few days are excellent. We are compleing work on the rather lengthy command sequences that will be needed to carry out the flare build-up and filament/sigmoid programs (see http://vega.uio.no/~schmiede/index_plan04.html). Together with Hugh Hudson (in Japan) we have been selecting test targets. We selected a region in the north, and it had a flare! The sun is quiet today but a new active region is coming over the east limb and it will be ideally positioned in 4 - 5 days from now, on December 19, which is the current best estimate of the launch date.
