Subject: Flare Genesis Update - Jan 3

Yesterday we reluctantly passed over a fleeting launch opportunity. The sun was very quiet and Yohkoh and many other observatories were on a holiday schedule, so we ceded the launch opportunity to the MAXIS team, studying auroral hard X-rays http://www.geophys.washington.edu/Space/SpaceExp/Balloon/Antarctica99/). After all, the winds came up and they did not launch, but they will try again today. We hope the weather holds and allows a January 5 launch. Region 8815 at N11 is the likely target for the first part of the flight, but a more active region appears to be coming over the east limb.
