Subject: MEOC Campaign Target

To MEOC participants,

Today AR 9236 wins the competition for being the new prime MEOC target for 25 Nov 2000 for producing two X-class flares with halo CMEs, the latter reported by Simon Plunkett. Reports of the X-class flares are from NOAA. The flares seem to be occurring in association with pockets of magnetic flux around the leader spot but opposite in magnetic polarity to the sunspot. Hence we select the leader spot as the center for the MEOC target.

For limited field instruments, the coordinates on the leader sunspot in 9236 for 25 Nov 2000 at 00:00 UT are:

N21 W14 X= +217" Y= 324

Two other halo CMEs were also reported by Simon during the last two days. One is a Thanksgiving day special (for the U.S. holiday). It came from the MEOC target area and occurred in association with eruption of the filament on the northeasern boundary of AR9231. Extensive wave effects are seen in EIT with this event. The 4th halo producing event was in the SE from an area not promising for MEOC.

Thanks to participants who sent brief messages reporting observations of major events in the previous target region 9231 as well as those who anticipated and observed one of the the first two X-class flares in AR9236

Although we are compelled to change the MEOC target to AR9236, we will not discourage any participant who might have good reason to choose to follow-up on AR 9231 for events above the limb for another day rather than changing immediately to observe events in the new target region 9231.

We also feel that it is essential to mention that in choosing AR 9236 as the prime target, participants might well miss a major impending event in the active region complex 9240 now over the limb in the NW with a distinct sunspot and at least two filaments. The filament just east of the sunspot in the middle of the region is long and high and has shown extraordinary Doppler shifts throughout the last 6 hours. It could erupt at any time.

Happy observing!     Sara Martin and Peter Gallagher
